How do you get a cast to look like they’re ice skating on stage? This was the problem perplexing BrassNeck Theatre director Royston Bayfield when he first read the script for the upcoming production of Little Women.
‘I have always tried to be innovative and bring new ideas to the theatre but trying to get a cast to ice skate on stage at Yeadon Town Hall is a big ask!’ Said Royston ‘As much as I’d like to, we don’t have the budget to build a rink for the production – never mind the space!’
Royston eventually had a flash of inspiration to show a traditional pastime using a very modern technique – roller boots! The cast begged and borrowed their boots and, with some trepidation, tried them out a few weeks ago. After a few falls they soon got the hang of things and, though they would never consider themselves experts, the cast are more than holding their own with the help of some advice from choreographer Donna Woodman.
‘The cast are doing great and the skates and, along with a bit of help from low fog, make everything look superb; it’s worth the price of the ticket for this scene alone’ Commented Donna.
Little Women is BrassNeck Theatre’s first show since the acclaimed production of The Wedding Singer in May which had the audiences rocking in the isles. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s own family experiences Little Women follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America.
The beloved story of the March sisters is timeless and deals with issues as relevant today as when they were written. Now, this wonderful narrative has been brought to life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart. Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears, and a lifting of the spirit.
This modern, powerful score which was first heard on Broadway in 2006, soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache and hope – the sounds of a young America finding its voice. In years to come, we are sure that hundreds of productions by schools and theatres throughout the world will make this stage adaptation of the American classic novel a classic musical theatre treasure in its own right.
Little Women runs at Yeadon Town Hall from 11th-15th November at 7.30pm each evening and is sure to be another hit for this wonderful local theatre company. Tickets are selling well, however, good seats are still available – particularly early in the week.
